Ethnic Studies

Ethnic Studies is the study of the histories, experiences, cultures, and issues of racial ethnic groups in the United States. The Ethnic Studies discipline emphasizes the social and historical study of race and racism in the United States, and it is defined by its attention to the systemic power relations that arise from institutional, cultural, and societal, contextually imposed or chosen meanings and interpretations of 鈥渞ace.鈥 While the focus is on the experiences of racialized peoples in the United States, the department also understands that race and racism are not unique or exclusive to the United States and can be juxtaposed with academic parallels made beyond the borders of the United States.

OSPSIR
The Office of Special Programs & Student Retention Initiatives provides programs and services that support the recruitment, retention, and graduation of URM and Pell-eligible students at 乐播传媒app最新版本.  It accomplishes this through intentional student support services to prospective and current 乐播传媒app最新版本 students. Our programs include the Excel Scholars First-Year Mentoring Program and Club, the SANKOFA Scholars, National Panhellenic Fraternities and Sororities (Divine 9) collaborations, and the Conference for Budding and Blooming Leaders.
Umoja Community 乐播传媒app最新版本
Umoja Community 乐播传媒app最新版本 is designed for Black transfer students. The goal is to support their transition to the university, encourage graduation, and provide information for the next step whether it is the work force or an internship or grad school. This is accomplished within a supportive, loving community of students, faculty, staff, and administrators. We are part of the Umoja Community Education Foundation (UCEF), a national organization with more than seventy campus programs that is dedicated to the success of Black students. Umoja means unity in Swahili.

Umoja 乐播传媒app最新版本 will participate in Umoja events across the state as well as hold weekly workshops (Indabas) and provide study space, scholarships, and other perks. For more information, contact Umoja 乐播传媒app最新版本 Coordinator Dr. Paula L Parks at pparks@csub.edu or text/call 661-232-0191.
