On August 6, 2024, around 9:00 pm, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck near Lamont, only 17 miles south of Bakersfield. People nearby felt shaking for 10-15 seconds, and even many of our neighbors near Los Angeles felt the eearthquake. Although California is no stranger to earthquakes, with a long history of seismicity on the San Andreas Fault and other faults throughout the state, events like this one are reminders that we should be prepared not only for large earthquakes but also smaller events closer to home.
