Alumni Hall of Fame 2012 Inductees

Bernard C. Barmann, Sr. - Barmann is the former County Counsel, Chief Civil Attorney, for the County of Kern, a post he held for 25 years before retiring in 2009. Born in Maryville, Missouri, he came to California in 1960 for graduate work at Stanford University on a National Defense Scholarship to study classical languages and literature. His undergraduate degree is from the Immaculate Conception College in Missouri. He also has a Ph.D. from Stanford University, a juris doctorate from the University of San Diego, and a master's in public administration from 乐播传媒app最新版本 in 1987. Barmann has been active in the San Joaquin Federal Bar, the California State Bar, and the Kern County Bar.

He is currently serving on the boards of the Kern County Bar Foundation, Valley Public Radio, Rotary Club of Bakersfield, and the Kern County Academic Decathlon. Barmann has taught literature at Ohio State University, the University of Toronto, and as an adjunct faculty member in the College of Business and Public Administration at 乐播传媒app最新版本 for 12 years. He was 乐播传媒app最新版本's commencement speaker in 2003. Since his retirement, Bermann has enjoyed doing pro bono legal work for nonprofits in the community, traveling, and golfing.

Nancy Chaffin - Chaffin received her bachelor's in Business Administration in 1991 from 乐播传媒app最新版本 and served on the university's Alumni Board of Directors for 16 years in numerous capacities including president and treasurer. Chaffin is currently vice president of administration & operations at The Bakersfield Californian, where she has worked since 2002.

Outside of her career, Chaffin is a tireless community servant and has served on boards and committees for numerous nonprofits including the Kern Adult Literacy Council, Court Appointed Special Advocates, and the Girls Scouts of Southern California. She has also been instrumental in A Life Interrupted, a community program that advocates safe and responsible driving practices to teens. Chaffin was the recipient of the California Women Lead's Women of Distinction Award in 2011, and has three Beautiful Bakersfield awards to her credit.

Jerry E. Scott - Scott is a three-time graduate of 乐播传媒app最新版本 and the first in his family to graduate from college. He received his bachelor's degree in physical education with a minor in English in 1976, his master's in education in 1981 and his administrative credential in 1992. He also ran track under 乐播传媒app最新版本 coach Charlie Craig. Scott and his brother moved to Wasco to live with their mother in 1967. Scott entered the Educational Opportunity Program at 乐播传媒app最新版本 and after graduation went to work for Bakersfield City School District as an English teacher. He later served as athletic director and high school principal in Wasco.

For the past 11 years, Scott has served as superintendent of the Lost Hills Union School District. Scott has served on numerous community boards including the Mendiburu Magic Foundation and Michael Stewart Foundation, and has amassed many community awards and recognitions including being inducted into the Kern County Official's Association Hall of Fame. He was recently featured in Bakersfield Life magazine's "People to know in Kern County."
